Thousands visit the kever of the Amora Rav Oshiya on Tu B'Av, observing the custom of circling the gravesite as a segulah. A five-minute walk downhill leads to Ein Tiria, a spring beside Nachal Peki'in, featuring shaded seating, flowing water, and scenic surroundings.
A centuries-old oak tree towers above the gravesite, long revered by Jews and local Druze residents. According to local tradition, the Druze collected only leaves that naturally fell, burning them as incense around the sick based on their belief in the tree's healing powers and never cut branches for firewood or construction.
Local legend describes Ottoman soldiers who cut branches from the tree for firewood despite the site's sanctity; the story holds that none of them survived, attributed to desecration of the holy site.
Visitors typically recite tefillos and walk in circles around the grave. The site was once mistakenly identified as the burial place of Rav Yehoshua ben Chananyah, but this attribution has been rejected. According to the Arizal, Rav Yehoshua is buried in Tzfas. Although Rav Oshiya's exact date of passing is unknown, the accepted custom is to visit on Tu B'Av.
Rav Oshiya was a fourth-generation Amora who worked as a launderer. According to Chazal, while washing clothes in a river, he found jewelry lost by a Roman noblewoman bathing nearby. Even after she told him to keep it, he returned the valuables, explaining that the Torah commands honesty. Upon his death, tradition relates his bier was seen floating through the air, prompting his contemporaries to apply the verse, "If a man would give all the wealth of his house for love, it would utterly be despised."
Ein Tiria, fed by natural springs, includes shaded picnic tables, water channels, and a sealed well. A local Chassidic yeshiva has expressed interest in renovating the spring as a mikvah, though local Druze residents have reportedly opposed the plan.
The site is accessible via Waze by entering "Kever Rabi Oshiya Ish Tiria." A small hospitality beis medrash near the entrance offers hot and cold drinks and restroom facilities.
