Nearly 18 hours after a massive fire erupted at the Agri Star Meat & Poultry plant in Postville early Thursday morning, firefighters remained on scene working to extinguish hot spots within the facility.
The fire was reported around 4:00 a.m. After smoke was detected at the plant. The Postville Fire Department requested mutual aid due to the blaze's size, prompting 18 fire departments from across the region to respond, along with local police and the Iowa state patrol.
No injuries were reported despite the fire's scale and hazardous conditions inside the building.
Postville's mayor characterized the situation as "truly a tragedy" While acknowledging the emergency response. "When people come together and work like they're working... it's all dangerous. It's a big building. You've got refrigerants, you've got everything in there. I just pray to G-d that they can find a way to get it out."
The City of Postville requested residents conserve water to maintain adequate pressure for firefighting operations. Officials also issued a smoke advisory due to reduced visibility and declining air quality from smoke drifting across the area.
A local resident indicated that the sections most heavily affected appear to include the shipping department, freezer, kitchen, and laundry facilities. Damage assessment was ongoing.
Agri Star, one of North America's largest kosher meat producers and Postville's largest employer, had not yet determined how the fire would affect production and distribution, or whether it would disrupt the kosher meat supply during the busy late-summer and Tishrei season.
The facility experienced previous incidents: a May 2026 boiler room fire that was contained to that area, and a February 2021 propane explosion that injured two workers.
Authorities had not announced a cause, with investigation expected to begin once hot spots were fully extinguished.
