Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday launched Israel's national artificial intelligence program, asserting that the country aims to establish itself as a global AI powerhouse and take advantage of what he characterized as a brief but historic opportunity.
Netanyahu unveiled the initiative alongside Brig. Gen. (res.) Erez Askal, head of Israel's National Artificial Intelligence Directorate. The program is designed to strengthen Israel's position in the rapidly advancing artificial intelligence sector while using AI to foster economic growth and benefit the Israeli public.
"We are in a historic window of opportunity, but it is a very short one," Netanyahu said. "The future is not waiting for us; we are creating it."
The move reflects a broader global effort, as governments and technology companies worldwide race to expand their artificial intelligence capabilities. AI is increasingly viewed as essential to economic competitiveness, national security, and technological leadership. Israel, which already hosts a substantial technology sector with numerous artificial intelligence companies, is seeking to build on that foundation as competition in the field accelerates internationally.
Netanyahu stated that the national program would work to position Israel among the world's leading AI powers and convert technological progress into increased economic prosperity and benefits for citizens.
