Almost 20% of hate crimes in Seattle this year targeted Jews, who are an estimated 1% of city's metro area

From January through July of this year, Jews were targets of nearly one-fifth of hate crimes recorded in Seattle. The city documented 66 hate crimes during that period, with 13 targeting Jews - a proportion of 19.7%.

Jews comprise approximately 1% of the Seattle metro area population, according to Pew Research Center data from 2023-24.

When counting all incidents the city categorizes as involving bias - including hate crimes, crimes with "bias elements" Where bias is a secondary motivation, and non-crime bias incidents - Jews were targets in 7.2% of the 511 total incidents recorded from January through July.

Breaking down by category, 11 of 259 crimes with bias elements (4.2%) targeted Jews, and 13 of 186 bias incidents (7%) targeted Jews.

The data shows a different pattern for Arabs and Muslims, who make up about 2% of the Seattle metro area population. Through July, 23 incidents across all three categories targeted Arabs and Muslims: five hate crimes (7.6%), nine crimes with bias elements (3.5%), and nine bias incidents (4.8%).

The statistics indicate Jews faced significantly higher victimization rates. A Jew was 420% more likely than an Arab or Muslim to be the victim of a hate crime in Seattle. Jews were also 144% more likely to be targets of crimes with bias elements and approximately 189% more likely to be targeted in bias incidents compared to Arabs and Muslims.
