CENTCOM: Despite IRGC threats, Strait of Hormuz is 'open for transit'

U.S. Central Command disputed claims by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that it controls the Strait of Hormuz, asserting Wednesday that the waterway remains accessible for international shipping.

"The international waterway remains open for transit regardless of IRGC threats and attacks," CENTCOM stated, noting that commercial vessels continue to use the strait with American military assistance. The command said that since early May, U.S. Forces have facilitated the transit of more than 900 ships through the waterway.

The statement came after the IRGC said Thursday morning that it had prevented three oil tankers from passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian force, which the U.S. And other countries have designated as a terrorist organization, claimed through Iranian state media that vessels may only transit routes authorized by Tehran.
