Colombia Recognizes Israel's Sovereignty Over Golan Heights

Colombia's Foreign Ministry announced Saturday that the country recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, citing Israel's security concerns and the territory's strategic importance given regional instability.

The ministry statement emphasized that Israel faces ongoing security threats along its borders and has the right to defend itself against external threats. It referenced the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, noting that the violence demonstrated the "gravity and changing nature" Of threats facing Israel.

Colombia said that Israeli control and sovereignty over the Golan Heights is essential to Israel's national defense and its capacity to protect its citizens. The government framed the decision as consistent with its commitment to fostering stable and lasting peace in the Middle East.

The recognition came as part of an agreement between the two countries, according to the Foreign Ministry.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar stated: "I thank Colombia and my good friend, Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella @ABDELAESPRIELLA, for his historic decision to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, following our meeting in Barranquilla, Colombia, last Thursday."

The Golan Heights were captured by Israel from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War and were annexed by Israel in 1981. International recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the territory remains limited.
