A kosher pizzeria in Lawrence was extensively damaged in an early morning fire on Tuesday that also affected several neighboring businesses. Fire crews arrived at the commercial building on Central Avenue near Rockaway Turnpike at approximately 3:33 a.m. Flames spread beyond the initial storefront, prompting the fire to be upgraded to a second alarm.
Approximately 150 firefighters from multiple Nassau County departments responded to the scene, along with fire marshal personnel and specialized drone teams. The fire was brought under control within about 90 minutes, with no injuries reported.
Jerusalem II Pizza sustained heavy damage and will remain closed during repairs. A nearby thrift store also experienced significant smoke and water damage, with much of its stock considered unsalvageable.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities are examining the scene, with early indications suggesting a possible connection to an electrical malfunction in refrigeration equipment, though no cause has been officially confirmed.
Bonnie Sperry, executive director of the National Council of Jewish Women Peninsula Section, thanked the firefighters, police officers and emergency medical personnel for their response, noting their efforts helped limit damage to surrounding properties. The organization's thrift shop on Central Avenue, located in the affected building, will remain closed during cleanup due to smoke damage and is not currently accepting donations.
