Ford Motor Co. Is recalling more than half a million Broncos due to a wiring harness defect in the engine compartment that can short circuit and pose a fire risk.
The recall affects 565,691 Ford Broncos and Bronco Raptors from model years 2021-2026. Ford estimates that approximately 1% of the recalled vehicles contain the defective wiring harness. The company has not identified any accidents or injuries connected to the issue.
The defect stems from inadequate protection of the wiring harness, which can expose wires and cause short circuits. If a short occurs, drivers may observe smoke emanating from the air vents or receive a warning message on the dashboard, potentially followed by flames from the passenger side of the engine compartment.
Dealerships will install protective covers over the wiring harness at no cost to owners. Ford's recall number is 26S55, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's identification number is 26V468. Vehicle identification numbers affected by the recall can be searched on NHTSA.gov.
