Republican strategist Josh Holmes warned Sunday that Democrats risk nominating an unelectable candidate in Michigan's open Senate race, potentially costing them control of the chamber.
Holmes, a former chief of staff to Sen. Mitch McConnell and co-host of the Ruthless podcast, made the remarks during a Fox News appearance. "They could very well nominate a candidate who is absolutely unelectable in Michigan, a state they have to win if they want a Senate majority," He said. "So I would be worried if I were them."
The Michigan seat, being vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters, is considered essential for Democrats seeking to flip Senate control. The Democratic primary has featured competition between more moderate and progressive candidates, reflecting party divisions.
Holmes's comments align with Republican arguments that progressive nominees in swing states could alienate moderate voters and provide Republicans an electoral opening. Michigan remains a contested battleground for Senate control.
