Iran's foreign ministry spokesman issued a warning to Bulgaria on Tuesday against permitting the U.S. To conduct military operations from Bulgarian territory targeting Iran.
Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei stated that any activity supporting U.S. Attacks on Iran would constitute complicity in what he characterized as "aggression and war crimes", according to Iranian state media cited by Reuters.
The warning came after Bulgaria's government indicated it would seek parliamentary approval to station up to eight U.S. Tanker aircraft at an air base in the country, which is both a NATO and European Union member.
Baghaei called on Bulgaria not to become "an accomplice of aggressors and lawbreakers". The tanker aircraft are primarily used for refueling other aircraft in flight, including during military strikes.
Bulgaria's government has proposed stationing the U.S. Aircraft at the Bezmer military facility, located approximately 260 kilometers southeast of Sofia.
Tensions between the U.S. And Iran have escalated following the collapse of an interim ceasefire agreement reached a month prior, with the potential for wider conflict. Bulgaria's government has called for an end to hostilities involving Iran and has not yet made a final decision on hosting U.S. Military aircraft as the matter remains under internal discussion.
