Israel's government voted Sunday to extend its authority to call up military reservists through September 30, replacing an earlier order from May.
The extension applies to Israel Defense Forces reserve mobilization under Section 8 of the Reserve Service Law, 2008. The maximum number of reservists authorized for call-up will decrease from 280,000 to 240,000, reflecting what the government characterized as updated operational requirements.
According to the order's explanatory notes, reserve mobilization remains essential for defensive operations, routine security missions and cross-border operations against adversaries.
The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when approximately 6,000 combatants from Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Fatah, along with unaffiliated Gazan civilians, crossed Israel's southern border. The infiltration resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths, thousands of injuries and 251 kidnappings.
The conflict has since broadened to include IDF operations against Iranian-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon, activity in Judea and Samaria, military operations in Syria, responses to Houthi attacks from Yemen, strikes within Iranian territory and attacks originating from Iraq.
