Sheba Medical Center in Ramat Gan, near Tel Aviv, announced on Tuesday it will partner with OpenAI to operate as a fully AI-powered hospital, marking OpenAI's first international hospital partnership.
The collaboration will grant physicians, nurses, researchers and staff secure access to an advanced AI platform designed to synthesize current medical evidence and support faster clinical decision-making. In return, Sheba will provide feedback, research and real-world clinical insights to OpenAI to inform the development of healthcare AI technologies globally.
Clinicians will be able to access millions of peer-reviewed research papers, clinical guidelines and public health sources through the platform, with responses including citations, journal references and publication dates to allow verification of evidence behind recommendations. The platform will also support administrative and operational tasks, automating routine work and reducing documentation burdens across the organization.
"We are not just implementing AI in medicine but building a fully AI-powered hospital, and providing secure access to the world's most advanced AI is a decisive step in that transformation," Said Professor Eyal Zimlichman, chief innovation and AI officer at Sheba Medical Center. He noted that the tool would reduce administrative burden and burnout while enabling clinicians to focus on patients.
The center emphasized the collaboration incorporates rigorous security and governance safeguards. OpenAI's models will not be trained on Sheba's data, patient information will remain protected, and all medical decisions will remain the sole responsibility of Sheba's healthcare professionals.
