Lebanon's President Joseph Aoun departed for Washington on Saturday morning at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump, accompanied by his wife, Naamat Aoun.
A Lebanese-American summit is scheduled at the White House, where President Aoun will meet with American officials to discuss Lebanon's situation and efforts to strengthen the ceasefire, restore security and stability to the country and its southern region, secure Israeli withdrawal from occupied Lebanese areas, and extend state authority across all territories.
Israel and Lebanon signed a 14-point framework agreement on June 26 establishing terms for Lebanese Armed Forces deployment in areas vacated by Israeli troops. The agreement envisions Israeli withdrawal from its security zone along the border as Lebanese forces show capability to clear these areas of terrorist elements, including the Iranian-backed Hezbollah, and serves as a basis for potential normalization between the nations.
Israeli and Lebanese delegations held a sixth round of U.S.-mediated talks in Rome on Tuesday and Wednesday, reaching agreement on guidelines for implementing the framework agreement's initial pilot zones and advancing to a technical negotiation phase.
