A major fire broke out early Tuesday at the Agri Star Meat & Poultry plant in Postville, Iowa, one of the world's largest kosher meatpacking facilities. The blaze was reported shortly after 4 a.m. At the facility on North West Street, sending thick plumes of smoke visible for miles across northeast Iowa and into neighboring Fayette County.
Multiple regional fire departments responded to the scene. Agri Star confirmed the fire in a Facebook post around 9 a.m., stating that emergency crews had been on scene since early morning and were actively working to contain the flames. "The safety of our team members, emergency responders, and the surrounding community remains our highest priority," The company said. Officials indicated disruptions to distribution are expected.
No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire and the full extent of the damage remain under investigation.
The city of Postville urged residents to conserve water to support firefighting efforts. Fayette County Emergency Management issued a smoke advisory, warning of potential air quality and visibility issues in the area, particularly near Clermont. Officials advised vulnerable individuals to limit outdoor activity, keep windows closed if smoke is heavy, and exercise caution while driving.
Agri Star is Allamakee County's largest employer and a major supplier of kosher beef and poultry. The plant was formerly known as Agriprocessors and was acquired in 2009 by interests associated with Canadian businessman Hershey Friedman. It has experienced previous incidents, including a smaller boiler-room fire in May and an explosion in 2021 that injured two workers.
The fire continued to burn for hours Tuesday morning as crews worked to bring it under control.
