MAMDANI'S $800K SUBWAY EXPERIMENT: NYC To Test Using Underground Heat To Warm City Buildings
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the MTA are supporting an $800,000 thermal-energy study at Chambers Street subway station to evaluate whether excess heat from underground areas can be captured and stored beneath an unused platform for later use in warming nearby buildings during winter months. According to officials, the system could reduce platform temperatures by several degrees while lowering heating expenses at adjacent city structures, including the Dinkins Municipal Building, which currently spends approximately $1.5 million annually on heating.
