"MISCOMMUNICATION": Mamdani Walks Back Claim That Wife Would Receive NYPD Escort for Middle East Trip

Mayor Zohran Mamdani attributed a "miscommunication" To the conflicting statements surrounding his wife's planned travel security after the NYPD publicly contradicted City Hall's initial claim that she would receive a taxpayer-funded police detail.

The disagreement emerged when City Hall reversed its position on security arrangements. Mamdani stated that his wife, Rama Duwaji, will travel next month without NYPD protection, contradicting an earlier announcement from a senior administration spokesperson that officers would accompany her.

"There was a miscommunication. She has not yet taken that trip and when she takes that trip it will be without any NYPD detail," Mamdani told PIX11.

The controversy began after City Hall confirmed that Duwaji had requested NYPD security for an upcoming trip to Syria and Lebanon to visit family. Mayoral spokeswoman Dora Pekec initially stated: "Upon the strong recommendation of the NYPD, the first lady's security detail will be joining her when she travels to visit family in Syria and Lebanon."

The NYPD quickly disputed this claim, stating that the department does not assign officers to accompany personal overseas travel to countries under the highest US travel warning. "The NYPD does not send officers to countries with level four travel advisories for discretionary reasons not linked to investigative work," A department spokesperson said. "This is not an investigative trip, and therefore, NYPD personnel will not be traveling there for it."

A source said the confusion resulted from a breakdown in communication, noting "They never checked with the commissioner."

City Hall declined to provide additional details about the trip or clarify its purpose beyond visiting family. A source confirmed it has no official government purpose.

Both Syria and Lebanon are designated by the US State Department under its highest-level "Do Not Travel" Advisory due to ongoing security concerns.

Former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton characterized such a deployment as "ill-advised" And costly, requiring extensive coordination with federal authorities. He also stated the public contradiction should not have occurred.

David Catalfamo, former communications director for former Governor George Pataki, said the mayor's office should defer to law enforcement on security matters and improve communication with the NYPD. Duwaji, a 29-year-old Syrian-American artist, had traveled abroad the previous month without police protection, participating in events organized by Women Sanctuary, a travel organization focused on Muslim women.
