New Aircraft Carrier Heads Toward Mideast After Reports of Issues on Long-Deployed Uss Lincoln

The Pacific-based USS George Washington has begun transit toward the Middle East following reports of mental health and supply challenges aboard the long-deployed USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been supporting U.S. Operations against Iran.

The Abraham Lincoln has completed more than 240 consecutive days at sea, a record-setting deployment duration. Democratic lawmakers are seeking accountability from the Pentagon regarding conditions aboard the carrier, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Thursday that reports of problems were "completely misrepresented."

Extended carrier deployments during the Iran conflict have raised concerns about the toll on service members separated from home for prolonged periods and the mounting strain on ships and equipment. Though recent U.S.-Iran tensions have eased, the Navy maintains a blockade of Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz, with no clear administration guidance on ending the conflict.

The USS George Washington departed Da Nang, Vietnam, last week and has since transited the Singapore Strait. A Navy official confirmed the carrier is in the Strait of Malacca, positioned to enter the Indian Ocean and replace the Abraham Lincoln as one of two carriers stationed in the Middle East.

The Abraham Lincoln deployed November 21 from San Diego and arrived in the region in January, before the Iran war launched February 28. The Navy acknowledged that combat disrupted traditional Middle East supply hubs, resulting in shortages and loss of mail. A Navy statement noted that "leadership prioritized mission-critical supplies: first food, then hygiene items, then mail," And stated sailors now have access to clean water and "healthy meal options."

Democratic senators including Connecticut's Richard Blumenthal and Arizona's Ruben Gallego are seeking investigations and visibility into shipboard conditions. Gallego stated the treatment of sailors is "not just disgusting; it's dangerous." Hegseth said he wants the Lincoln's crew rotated quickly but defended conditions, stating he has "more respect and gratitude for those sailors than anybody."

Reports have emerged of mental health struggles among Abraham Lincoln sailors. The Navy stated it has "not observed an increase in suicidal ideations or attempts aboard the ship" But declined to provide data, citing operational security and privacy concerns. A Navy official disclosed that a sailor went overboard in early August and was recovered and transferred for follow-on care but would not characterize the incident.

Other carriers have experienced extended deployments raising morale concerns, including the USS Gerald R. Ford, which returned in May after an 11-month deployment - the longest since the Vietnam War - during which a laundry fire left hundreds of sailors without sleeping spaces.
