NUCLEAR SCIENCE: Saudi Arabia Hosts International Olympiad Weeks After Reactor Approval

Saudi Arabia hosted the International Nuclear Science Olympiad in Jeddah, bringing together 120 students and scientific experts from 19 countries. The program focused on nuclear physics, radiation protection, peaceful applications of radiation, and practical training in nuclear measurements and experiments.

The event took place weeks after Saudi Arabia received approval to advance construction of a nuclear reactor. Twelve of the participating countries were Muslim-majority nations, including Jordan and Syria, which border Israel. Turkey and Pakistan, which have strengthened security ties with Saudi Arabia, also took part. Other participants were Bahrain, Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Maldives, Mongolia, Oman, the Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

The International Nuclear Science Olympiad was approved by the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2024. According to the IAEA, the competition aims to "promote the safe and peaceful use of nuclear technologies, encourage young people to pursue careers and education in nuclear science, and foster innovation in nuclear applications." Participants received hands-on training alongside theoretical instruction.

The hosting reflects Saudi Arabia's expanding involvement in nuclear technology and its pursuit of a domestic civilian nuclear program. The Kingdom has stated its nuclear ambitions are focused on peaceful purposes, including energy production.
