The New York City Council is moving forward with a comprehensive legislative initiative to address safety issues related to electric bikes. The effort will include new regulations, enhanced oversight, and a reassessment of how current e-bike laws are enforced.
Council leadership has scheduled a hearing for next month to evaluate enforcement of existing e-bike regulations and determine whether new legislation is required to decrease crashes and enhance pedestrian safety.
Proposed measures include mandating that app-based delivery companies register with the city's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection to increase oversight. Another proposal would obligate delivery platforms to gather and maintain information about riders to support enforcement activities.
Council members indicated that additional proposals anticipated later this year may tackle matters such as illegal high-speed e-bikes, insurance mandates, street design modifications, and traffic enforcement strategies.
According to lawmakers, the initiative aims to enhance safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and delivery workers while ensuring delivery service companies assume responsibility for encouraging safe riding practices.
The legislative package emerges in response to ongoing concerns about e-bike-related crashes and growing pressure to strengthen enforcement of existing traffic regulations throughout New York City.
