Anti-Jewish hate crimes in New York City rose 8.5% during the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period the previous year, according to NYPD statistics released Monday. The department recorded 205 confirmed anti-Jewish hate crimes through July, up from 189 in the prior year.
Anti-Jewish incidents represented 56.9% of all confirmed hate crimes recorded so far this year. The NYPD reported 360 confirmed hate crimes citywide through the first seven months of 2026, compared with 329 during the same period in 2025, a 9.4% increase. July saw 33 confirmed hate crimes reported.
The New York Post reported the figures under a headline linking the increase to Mayor Zohran Mamdani's tenure, though the NYPD data itself does not identify a cause for the rise.
The statistics showed declines across all seven major crime categories. Shootings fell 21.3% in July year-over-year and were down 7.5% year to date, with 59 shooting incidents recorded in July compared with 243 in July 2020. Murders declined 32.3% in July and 22.8% through the first seven months of the year. Robbery, burglary, grand larceny, felony assault and auto theft posted year-over-year declines ranging from 0.4% to 25.3%.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch said in a statement that the department maintained historically low violent crime levels while securing major summer events including the NBA Finals, FIFA World Cup, Sail250 and Fourth of July celebrations. "Through it all, even as the demands on this department reached historic levels, the men and women of the NYPD delivered double-digit declines in major crime and record lows in violent crime across the city," Tisch said.
She attributed the reductions to the department's "data-driven precision policing policy" And officer performance.
Jewish organizations and elected officials have expressed ongoing concern about antisemitic incidents in the city amid tensions related to the Israel-Hamas war. The NYPD has said it devotes significant investigative and security resources to hate crimes, particularly those targeting the Jewish community.
