Former Rishon LeTzion Rav Shlomo Moshe Amar delivered a detailed class on the laws of the Beis Hamikdash at Yeshivas Shuvei Nafshi in Jerusalem, where he argued that the halachic prohibition against ascending Har HaBayis remains in effect because the exact boundaries of the sacred areas cannot be determined with certainty today.
During the class, Rav Amar addressed the question of whether sacrifices could theoretically be offered without the Beis Hamikdash, then turned to what he characterized as a grave prohibition against ascending Har HaBayis in contemporary times. He challenged those who contend that the precise measurements and permitted areas of Har HaBayis are sufficiently known to permit visitors to enter without violating halachah.
Rav Amar cited the Rambam's ruling in Hilchos Beis Habechirah regarding the construction of the Second Beis Hamikdash, which states that the testimony of Chananiah, Mishael, and Azariah was needed to establish the precise location and dimensions of the mizbeiach - even though many elders who had witnessed the destruction of the First Beis Hamikdash were still alive and could seemingly have identified it themselves. According to Rav Amar, this show the extraordinary precision required in determining the sanctified areas of Har HaBayis and shows why contemporary claims of certainty regarding its exact boundaries cannot be relied upon.
