For the first time in Australia, Renewal facilitated a living kidney transplant, representing a significant milestone in expanding living kidney donation opportunities. Renewal is a nonprofit organization focused on raising awareness about living kidney donation and supporting donors and recipients through the transplant process.
The recipient, Stanley, a Sydney dentist who had spent nearly 25 years serving patients in the Randwick and Maroubra communities, faced kidney failure after a lifetime dedicated to caring for others. The donor, Leah, a mother from Melbourne, made the decision to donate one of her kidneys to save a man she had never met.
The connection began when Stanley's son contacted Yaisef Telsner, a previous Renewal kidney donor, initiating the search for a living donor. Recognizing limited awareness of living kidney donation in Australia, Renewal partnered with Chabad Youth to host a kidney donation awareness and swabbing event, led by Mendy Goldberg, a former Renewal donor who had recently relocated from Toronto. Leah attended this event and later testing confirmed she was a compatible match.
The transplant required extensive coordination over years among transplant specialists, medical authorities, and Renewal's team. Renewal's Australian liaison, Irit Lang, dedicated hundreds of hours guiding both Stanley and Leah through the process and coordinating with medical teams across multiple time zones.
"This transplant is about far more than one successful surgery," Said Irit Lang. "It demonstrates what is possible when awareness, education, and extraordinary kindness come together. We hope this milestone inspires many more Australians to learn about living kidney donation and consider how they, too, can save a life."
