A senior United Torah Judaism official reportedly proposed staging a public conflict with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to benefit both the Chareidi parties and Likud, according to political analyst Amit Segal.
Segal disclosed the proposal Sunday, following Netanyahu's recent comments on the draft law. He said the conversation between high-ranking officials from the two parties occurred several weeks prior.
According to Segal, "A few weeks ago, a very, very senior figure in United Torah Judaism approached a very, very senior figure in Likud and told him, 'Let's fight. It will help you, (it's obvious why), but it will help us too.'"
Segal attributed the proposal to dissatisfaction within the Chareidi community regarding its political representatives' performance. He noted that recent polling has shown declining support for Chareidi parties ahead of the next Knesset election.
"Among the Chareidim, one of the reasons you see in most polls that their representation is declining ahead of the next Knesset is because many people in the Chareidi street are convinced that their members of Knesset have disappointed them," Segal said.
He cited government policies on municipal property taxes, daycare funding, and housing as sources of that disappointment, stating that a public confrontation would also benefit United Torah Judaism politically.
Segal said he was unaware of Likud's response to the proposal but suggested recent developments may signal a strategic shift. "I don't know what Likud's response was, but today you can already see Netanyahu changing direction and saying there will not be a second law freezing arrests."
