President Donald Trump has told donors in private that he wants Vice President JD Vance to win the 2028 presidential election, according to reporting by The Washington Post, suggesting a potential endorsement of Vance as his successor.

The Washington Post, citing people familiar with the remarks, said Trump made the comments during closed-door conversations while maintaining publicly that he has not yet decided whom to support in the Republican primary.

According to the report, some of Trump's advisers have noted that the president has reached no final decision and continues to promote competition among possible candidates, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Trump has repeatedly declined to publicly back a 2028 candidate, saying the timing is premature.
