Spain, Italy Near Tourism Capacity Limits, TUI Chief Warns

Spain and Italy are approaching saturation points in their tourism capacity heading into the summer season, according to Sebastian Ebel, chief executive of TUI, a major European travel operator.

Ebel noted that Spain is nearly fully booked, with limited room for additional tourist growth in one of Europe's most visited destinations. Southern Europe is experiencing unusually high visitor volumes overall.

Spain is expected to receive approximately 100 million international visitors this year. Both countries' popular attractions are reporting elevated occupancy levels, while local populations are experiencing intensifying effects from visitor crowding.

Communities in Spanish and Italian cities have organized protests in response to tourism volumes. Government reactions have included raising tourist levies and implementing curbs on short-term rental operations and cruise ship arrivals.

While demand overall remains robust, Ebel indicated that growth is shifting toward less saturated markets such as Egypt and Turkey. TUI is adjusting its flight and hotel allocations in response to evolving booking trends.

Travelers are demonstrating increased attention to pricing and holiday type options, Ebel said.

The situation highlight a central tension for Europe's most heavily trafficked coastal and cultural destinations: maintaining tourism's economic contributions while pursuing more responsible management approaches.
