President Donald Trump declared that any U.S. Civil nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia will proceed only if the kingdom joins the Abraham Accords, effectively tying normalization with Israel to the proposed deal.
In a social media post, Trump stated the agreement would be strictly for peaceful nuclear energy and would prohibit uranium enrichment. "The Civil Nuclear Deal (There will be no enrichment of material!) being made between the United States Department of Energy and Saudi Arabia, which pertains only to non-military use such as the ones that Iran and UAE (and others) already have, will be approved, but is totally subject to Saudi Arabia joining the very respected and successful Abraham Accords."
He further noted that the United States has no objection to civilian nuclear energy programs without enrichment capabilities, adding, "The United States is not opposed to Civil (Non-Enriched) Nuclear Facilities. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP."
Trump has previously called for additional Middle Eastern nations to join the Abraham Accords, the normalization agreements brokered during his administration. The accords, signed in 2020, initially brought the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain into formal diplomatic relations with Israel, later expanding to include Kazakhstan, Morocco, and Sudan.
Trump has specifically encouraged Saudi Arabia and Qatar to lead by joining the accords, contending that nations unwilling to normalize relations with Israel should not expect participation in future peace agreements involving Iran. During the June G7 summit, he told media outlets he believes additional Arab countries will soon join the accords, praising original participants as "very smart countries."
Media reports citing anonymous administration officials indicated the Trump administration has been exploring nuclear cooperation with Saudi Arabia, with discussions at varying stages. The White House and Saudi government had not publicly commented on these reports at the time.
