Trump Media Company Announces a Massive Loss and New Turnaround Effort

Trump Media & Technology, which operates the Truth Social platform, reported a $238 million loss for the second quarter, more than ten times the prior-year loss of roughly $23 million. Per-share losses widened to 86 cents from 8 cents.

The company announced plans to abandon a year-long expansion into unrelated sectors including cryptocurrency and online betting, redirecting focus to its core social media mission. Chief Executive Kevin McGurn stated: "We made the disciplined choice to pivot in order to invest more time and resources in our most important initiatives. We will say no to things or change course as warranted."

A significant portion of the quarterly loss stemmed from unrealized paper losses tied to declining values of the company's bitcoin and Cronos token holdings. Excluding those losses alongside taxes and interest, operating losses still rose to $164 million from $44 million year-over-year.

McGurn outlined a new service called Truth API, which provides paid early access to market data from top Truth Social posters for Wall Street trading firms. The service charges $60,000 to $100,000 monthly and has already signed ten customers, primarily high-frequency trading firms. McGurn indicated the potential customer base extends beyond traders to include data center operators, news organizations, and artificial intelligence developers, with annual revenue potentially reaching $7 million to $12 million.

The company plans to continue with a previously announced nuclear fusion venture through a merger with energy company TAE Technologies, expected to close by year-end. McGurn called it "the single most important driver of long-term value for this company."

Trump Media stock declined slightly in after-hours trading following the announcement. Second-quarter revenue reached $1.7 billion, more than double the prior year. The company held over $400 million in cash and short-term investments and $1.2 billion in bitcoin-related assets at quarter-end.
