President Trump called on Senate Majority Leader John Thune on Sunday to prevent the Senate from recessing until lawmakers pass the Save America Act or eliminate the filibuster.
In a statement, Trump said Thune "should not allow the United States Senate to 'leave town' until it passes The Save America Act or, far better still, TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER, where Republicans can then quickly pass everything they ever dreamed of, including a full and deep throated SAVE AMERICA ACT, the Budget, and the ever looming Debt Ceiling disaster, 1929!"
Trump asserted that Democrats "will do it on day one, and can't believe how lucky they got with this Senate leadership," And concluded, "Remember, stupidity always brings LOSING & DEATH!"
The Save America Act requires documentary proof of U.S. Citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and mandates photo identification at the polls. The House passed the measure earlier this year. Senate Republicans hold a 53-47 majority but face a 60-vote filibuster threshold. Thune has resisted calls to change or eliminate the rule.
Several Republican senators, including Mike Lee, Rick Scott, Ashley Moody, Tommy Tuberville and Jim Banks, have objected to an August recess without action on the bill. The pressure escalates as the Senate approaches its scheduled break amid negotiations over government funding and the debt ceiling ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Trump has repeatedly pressed Senate Republicans to end the filibuster to advance priorities with simple majority votes, contending Democrats would do likewise if they regain control. Thune and other GOP leaders have maintained the procedural tradition thus far.
