Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian pledged full Iranian backing for Hamas during negotiations over Gaza's future, according to Iranian state media. Speaking Wednesday with Hamas Political Bureau chairman Khalil al-Hayya, Pezeshkian reaffirmed Tehran's commitment to support the group throughout the diplomatic process and promised backing for "every step, initiative, and decision" Taken by Palestinian leadership as talks advance.
"The hearts and spirit of the Iranian people and officials are always with the Palestinian people, and Tehran will continue to support and stand alongside the Palestinian people," Pezeshkian said.
Hamas Political Bureau member Basem Naim, part of the group's negotiating team, said Hamas awaited an official reply from mediator Nikolay Mladenov regarding agreements on implementing Phase 2, noting "the high level of responsibility demonstrated by the movement in dealing with what was proposed to it." He also stated Hamas "highly appreciates the mediators' statement holding the enemy accountable for the ongoing crimes and the deliberate obstruction of the agreement."
Israel's defense establishment tightened approval procedures for military operations in Gaza following new directives from political leadership. Targeted eliminations now require personal authorization from IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, narrowing authority previously held by lower-ranking commanders. A security source noted the directive does not affect situations where Israeli troops face immediate threat, with forces continuing to respond under existing rules of engagement. The change applies only to preplanned operations against individuals not considered an immediate danger.
On Monday, mediators Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey released a joint statement criticizing Israel, arguing that continued IDF operations could jeopardize the ceasefire. The statement stressed Israel's need to comply with international law and ceasefire obligations, stating that violations constitute a breach and undermine efforts toward Phase 2 implementation. The mediators called on the international community to pressure Israel to fulfill its obligations "in a manner that ensures the completion of President Trump's peace plan."
The Board of Peace, following discussions with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior officials, said oversight of Gaza's demilitarization would be carried out by an International Stabilization Force and an Implementation Verification Committee including U.S. Representatives.
